Study the Word
Here is a simple way to help us grow in the knowledge of God’s love: With humility, read the Scriptures and study them.
Studying the Bible, with the goal of knowing God’s heart, can be an edifying form of meditation.
Let me ask this: Who wants to make up their own religion? Do you? I don’t. In fact, the Scriptures teach that if we rely on our own heart’s insights we are making a mistake.
He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But he who walks wisely will be delivered. (Proverbs 28:26)
I think I know, a little, how fallible I am. Therefore, I seek to place myself under the authority of the Spirit through the holy men who knew God and wrote what they heard and saw. I read and study the Bible.
Our understanding of God and all of life is imperfect. The Bible says so.
For we know in part and we prophesy in part; (1 Corinthians 13:9)
When it comes to knowing the nature of God’s love do we want to live in a fantasy? Of course not. However, despite our limitations, we must trust that the most simple things can be understood and relied upon with absolute surety. The Bible says so. And we are to meditate upon those simple things in order “to do according to all that is written.”
“This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.” (Joshua 1:8)
Let’s apply this passage to increasing in the knowledge of God. What do we need to do? We need to repent and adjust our hearts regarding the testimony God has given concerning His love for us. This adjustment will not always be easy. While we study about, and meditate upon, God’s love it is wise to recall that there is an adversary who actively seeks to contest the word of the LORD.
“When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road.” (Matthew 13:19)
“Indeed, has God said…?” (Genesis 3:1b) is the tempter’s age long introduction to unbelief, insecurity, and condemnation. We are easily swayed.
It is true that every one of us needs to be more deeply sanctified. We want to be thoroughly transformed. Despite our need, we really are on this journey and are in the process of becoming replicas of God’s Son! (Romans 8:29, 12:2; Colossians 3:10; 2 Corinthians 3:18)
While we’re on this pilgrimage the illumination that God loves you just-as-you-are, even though you are in need of fundamental change, may often seem too good to be true. Our conscience too easily agrees with the enemy’s condemnations. We can often give credence to his accusations and assist his destructive, demonic work. Let us, instead, choose to submit to the truth about how good God is, and resist the devil (slanderer). We are those who are inheriting a Kingdom that cannot be shaken (Hebrews 12:28).
Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; (Hebrews 12:28)
Let’s study the Scriptures with an eye to discern God’s true love and be grateful.
